This apartment, located in Marina Del Rey California presented a unique challenge because of its long narrow footprint and vertical orientation. The request of the client was to give the space character and style, something that the existing space was lacking. Entering the apartment one flight above the ground floor one enters into a small tight vestibule. Descending down a short flight of stairs one enters the master bedroom with attached bathroom. Moving vertically from the ground floor bedroom, one ascends back through the entry vestibule, on through to the living/kitchen area, up again past the second bathroom, one more flight of stairs to a den/second bedroom, and finally, up a last flight of stairs to a small personal office. The ground floor bedroom takes up the entire first floor while all other areas/rooms are either shared or split between the east and west side of the apartment and accessed via a switchback stair. The apartment is vertically oriented though its circulation, five short stair flights move one from ground level to the third floor. Areas/rooms flank a large central void in the center of the apartment, these rooms are never completely sealed off from this central open area and the effect is that of a grand loft space.
The existing condition was that of a plain white box. This lack of a cohesive and/or unifying element(s) made the existing condition feel compartmentalized. Without a common thread one experiences the apartment a series of disconnected follies.
To unify the apartment the concept of a ribbon was decided upon. Affected by air or a person a ribbon is set in motion and moves through a series of forms and shapes starting at one end beginning and continuing through to the other. The idea to create a metaphorically ribbon, a pattern of connections, moving from one area to the next would unify the apartment as a whole and yet have each room retain its own place in the circulation from master bedroom to office. Through the use of materials, graphics and colors the apartment becomes unified to the occupant whether traveling from one room to the next or sitting in one particular spot.
